Being discouraged is the #1 reason why people quit
I was asked a really good question this week, which was, “How do I not be discouraged in this business?” That is a fantastic question because as we know being discouraged is the #1 reason why people quit. It’s really hard. I just got back from National Training so I’m super hyped up. And one of the guys that we heard a talk from was a former editor of fortune magazine. He talked about how being an entrepreneur is really scary. You have to take a lot of risks. You are screaming inside most of the time. The thing that he said that really stuck with me was that it sucks 95% of the time. Five percent of the time, it’s freaking awesome. The rest of the time, it’s hard work, you’re doubting, it’s scary, you are feeling anxious because you don’t know what it going to happen. You are getting rejected. There is a lot of rejection involved. So, when you have all of that in front of you. All of this rejection and this difficulty and this 95% suckage, how do you keep going? If you don’t figure out how to do that, you’re going to quit. If you quit, you’ll never accomplish what you want to with your business.
Being in business for yourself sucks 95% of the time, so how do you keep going?
The Power of Persistence
I have read a book about How to Rock your Network Marketing business by Sarah Robbins. One of the things she says in it is that just really sticks with me is that she has seen statistically, that if you stick with your network marketing / direct sale business for 10 years – 95% of the people who stick with their direct sales business for 10 years or more reach the highest level in their company.
95% of the people who stick with business for 10 years or more reach the highest level in their company
So, we’re going to assume with Pure Romance that that is Senior Director. I went and did the math. The average senior director with Pure Romance takes home about $8000 a month in profit. This would include her retail sales (average sr director does about $5k a month), her lifestyle bonus of $500 a month, and her override from her team. So, if you can stick this out for 10 years, you will be taking home in profit, every month about $8000 dollars. There is a 95% chance that will happen.
Now, how are you willing to stick it out until that happens?
If I said you had a 95% chance of becoming that successful? What can make you stick it out? What can make you put up with the 95% suckage to get the 95% chance of making $8000 a month? This is the most important part of your business. You need to figure out what it is that inspires you. What is that you are willing to sacrifice that much for? How much are you willing to suffer? To work hard. To work lots of hours. To face rejection. To have people tell you that you are crazy. That you are wasting your time. How much are you willing to feel stupid because you are learning new skills that you don’t very well yet? What is it? What is going to make you go there?
For me, and for a lot of you, because many of you are mothers, it’s to provide a better life for your kids. My husband and I are working really hard because we are trying to pay off debt. When I started out with Pure Romance, we had $80,000 in student loan debt. How much to we have now? $40,000. We’re getting somewhere.
But it’s not really about paying off the debt because I want to get in a place where when my boys enter their adulthood, when they finish college, they don’t have debt. So, they’re not a slave to that debt like I am. And like my husband is. I would do anything to make that happen. Anything. So, putting up with 95% suckage. If I had to live 95% of my life having things that really suck, but if I had a 95% guarantee that if I put up with that suckage, I was going to make $8000 a month and be able to provide that much better of a future for my boys, I’d do it. Do it in a heartbeat. That’s what keeps me afloat. When the days stink, when I get rejected, when people tell me that I’m doing dumb things, when I’m just too tired and don’t want to do it anymore because gosh, I feel like I’m working and working and working and nothings going anywhere. When that happens, I get out something really important and it’s this. It’s a picture of my sons.
You need to have a picture of the thing that inspires you.
The thing that makes you want to work really hard, that makes you want to put up with the suckage. And make sure you have it someplace where you can see it. So, you remind yourself all the time this is worth it. Yes, I’m discouraged. Yes, it stinks. But if I stick with it. Just the consistency. Sticking with it as long as possible to make it work with a 95% guarantee that it will work, I can provide that thing for my children, for my family, for those dreams that I have personally and I can make that happen. Because I promise you, stick with it, remember those things.
Find a picture that represents that thing you really want.
Frame it. Put it someplace where you are going to see it every day, especially when you are working on your business. Take that framed picture, put it in your bag, take it to parties. When you get rejected, when you are feeling like you can’t book parties, when your parties suck, you look at that picture and remember it’s worth it.
You’re worth it. Your children are worth it. Don’t get discouraged. Success will come. 95% chance. I like those odds.
